Dissertation

Genoveva Gonzales-Mirelis successfully defended her PhD thesis Spatial distribution and conservation planning of seabed biological diversity. Genoveva has been supervised by PREHAB coordinator Mats Lindegarth. The dissertation took place at of Department of Marine Ecology - Tjärnö, University of Gothenburg, on December 12th. November 2011

Project meeting

PREHAB project meeting and kick-outPREHAB project meeting and Kick-out was arranged November 21-22 in Stockholm. The meeting took place in AquaBiota´s new and airy facilities - very nice! Eleven participants representing all PREHAB partners attended. On the agenda were discussions on the manuscripts and the web resource. Also, we initiated the work towards a tentative PREHAB 2 application, aiming for the first Bonus thematic call in 2012.

Other activities

Ulf Bergström participated in the online expert survey by the HELCOM HARMONY project on Ecosystem effects of human activities, November 30.

Mats Lindegarth represented PREHAB in a questions and answers panel addressing topics related to Baltic Sea research, at a stakeholder meeting arranged by the Bonus secretariat. Some 40 representatives from different EU Directorates, regional offices and the European Parliament offices attended. Brussels, Belgium, November 8.

Mats Lindegarth has coordinated comments from The Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment, on official report on participation in maritime spatial planning from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

Mats Lindegarth and Robin Svensson has provided expert support to a project group on sampling and modelling of conservation status in Swedish marine protected areas.

Mats Lindegarth and Genoveva Gonzales Mirelis has constructed a geodatabase on biological values in Kosterhavets Marine National Park. Link to popular version.

Markku Ollikainen provided scientific advice on nutrients and biodiversity in the Baltic Sea, at a meeting at the Ministry of Environment in Helsinki, on November 8th.

Markku Ollikainen was interviewed by the Finnish radio station Radio Nova on November 21st. The topic was water quality, fish stock and recreation in the Archipelogo Sea, and what we should do to improve them.

Markku Ollikainen was interviewed on the environmental status of the Archipelogo Sea, by the Finnish newspaper Lapin Kansa. Published on November 22.

Other activities

Sergej Olenin and Darius Daunys presented PREHAB in the national radio program Raktas ("Key") – Ar pažįstame Baltijos jūrą? ("Do we know the Baltic Sea?"). It is a debate program where public issues are discussed in an effort to identify problems and propose solutions. The program was broadcasted on August 26. May 2011

Project Meeting

A project meeting was arranged in Stockholm May 24-25. Nine participants attended the meeting, representing all partners exept Åbo Akademi University. Focus of this meeting was on the manuscripts. At least nine publications are well under way, and the plan is that they should be published or submitted to relevant and high ranked journals when the project ends in December. Also, some sessions were devoted to PREHABs´ planned web resource with scientifically based recommendations and advice for endusers. A first draft of the site, with text and figures is planned for in late September.

Other activities

Johanna Mattila participated in a workshop regarding re-transplantation of Zostera marina in the Puck's Bay (Poland), arranged by the Institute of Oceanography Polish Science Academy (IOPAS) 3-5 May 2011.

Mats Lindegarth provided written contributions on the expertise, aims and progress of PREHAB and its (high) relevance for marine spatial planning, to an inquiry by the "Official Reports of the Swedish Government". (Havsplanerings¬utredningen, M 2009:03).

Ulf Bergström provided input to the Swedish Government Commission on knowledge base for marine spatial planning.

Mats Lindegarth participated in a questionnaire on studies of "Scenario modelling" about the nature of joint scenario efforts regarding ecology and economy within PREHAB. The questionnaire was conducted by the BalticSTERN secretariat, in cooperation with BONUS Joint Baltic Sea Research and Development Programme, the European Environment Agency in Copenhagen (EEA) and the Swedish Institute for Marine Environment.

Ulf Bergström & Göran Sundblad participated in the questionnaire: "The European Commission online consultation to collect background information on Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) and Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) for the Impact Assessment on future action on MSP and ICZM".

Ulf Bergström was interviewed for the “Study on the impacts of future Maritime Spatial Planning policy options in the European Union: Interviews with relevant stakeholders and experts".
