Ecosystem valuation

The marine environment provides a wide range of benefits for humans through ecosystem services. These include for example production of fish, cultural services as recreation and research, and over-arching support services such as resilience and nutrient recycling. Through combining modern methods for economic valuation with the best available practices for ecological mapping in GIS, PREHAB will expand the use of economic valuation in the regional planning process.

Valuation study

To estimate the benefit of selected ecosystem goods and services provided by benthic habitats, a valuation survey is conducted. The survey questionnaire is designed to elicit peoples´preferences e.g. for species and habitats, food fit for consumption and recreational values, and the willingness-to-pay for the management of these. The survey has been sent to respondents in Lithuania, Sweden and Finland in January 2011.
