Successful course on spatial planning

Huso course 2011

On February 22nd to March 3rd 2011, PREHAB organized a multidisciplinary PhD-course on marine spatial planning: “Ecological, economical and institutional challenges for spatial planning in the Baltic - a multidisciplinary introductory course on ecological mapping and economic valuation of coastal areas”. The course took place at Åbo Akademi University Biological Station Husö on Åland, Finland. From a total of 29 applications sixteen students from eight countries were selected.

The course had a busy schedule with both theoretical lectures and practical exercises. In the latter students worked in groups to evaluate the use and outcome of previous mapping and modeling in real management cases, as well as doing economical evaluation practices. According to judgements in the evaluation forms from twelve of the students, the course was very much appreciated.

Most of the PREHAB-researchers were engaged as teachers. Besides that, Hermanni Backer from Helcom secretariat, Cecilia Lindblad from Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and Jan Marcin Weslawski from Institute of Oceanology in Poland, provided valuable input from their experiences of marine management.

Financial aid was given by the BONUS EEIG programme, Stiftelsen för Åbo Akademi Forskningsinstitut and University of Gothenburg.
