Comparing maps on construction and fish habitats

The distribution of marinas and similar coastal constructions are not randomly allocated in the archipelago. More commonly, the type of shoreline constructions we studied in PREHAB - jetties and small harbours - is heavily biased towards sheltered areas in the inner to middle archipelago zone. This is also where suitable conditions for fish are more likely to be found.

We calculated to which extent key fish habitats are “targeted” by marinas of different sizes. We did this in an overlay analysis - by comparing the distribution of fish recruitment habitats with the distribution of shoreline constructions, see figure below. This information is crucial in the subsequent scenario analyses.

Although boating activities are known to negatively influence fish species with a preference for vegetation, there is limited knowledge how far from jetties and small harbours this influence occurs. To incorporate this uncertainty, the overlay analyses were made for three separate distances: 100, 200 and 500 m from the predicted distribution of fish recruitment habitats.

By combining the extent to which habitats are targeted by constructions with the observed rates of change (for a given time period and area) yearly exploitation rates were calculated for each index of construction class.

Coastal constructions in fish habitats. For perch (Perca fluviatilis), the overlay analysis showed that important fish reproduction habitats are highly targeted by shoreline construction. For each percent of shoreline constructed, 2.9 percent (±0.6 SD) of available fish habitats were on average affected.
